Gov. Rick Perry Inducted

On 11 February 2010, a contingent of Texas Society, SAR Compatriots waited on the second floor of the Texas State Capitol.  Compatriots had traveled from across the great state of Texas to witness two significant events.  Texas Governor Rick Perry had been authorized to receive the NSSAR Gold Good Citizenship Medal.  Texas Society President Tom Lawrence facilitated the efforts and set up the meeting to award the medal.  The Citation started “in recognition of his outstanding achievements of National importance by improving the quality of life for all Americans along the U.S.-Mexican border.”  The second event was the Induction of Governor Perry into the San Antonio Chapter, SAR by President General Ed Butler.  Governor Perry is the fourth great grandson of James Dinsmore, a private in George Maxwell’s Company in Col. Isaac Shelby’s North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line.

The Compatriots attending were:  President General Ed Butler, Texas SAR President Tom Lawrence, Texas SAR President-Elect James Jones, Texas SAR Secretary Bill Marrs, Texas SAR Staff Secretary Don Pugh, Texas SAR Treasurer Peter McLellan, San Antonio Chapter President Peter Baron, and Color Guardsmen Marvin Morgan, John Knox, James Heath, Frank Rohrbough, Larry Stevens, and Ray Cox.

The Governor arrived and greeted each Compatriot.  President Lawrence read the Citation and the Governor was presented with the framed Certificate and Gold Good Citizenship Medal.  President General Butler then spoke to the Governor about his Patriot.  The Governor spoke of the Texas State Historian having done research into his genealogy and how he had a line back to 1060.  The Governor appreciated the work done by NSSAR Genealogist General Joseph Dooley in the proving of James Dinsmore.  President General Butler performed the Induction Ceremony and the Color Guard gave three Huzzahs for the Texas Society’s newest Compatriot.

Finally, the Governor was presented with the SAR Challenge coin.  He reciprocated by giving each Compatriot one of his Challenge Coins.  Handshakes were exchanged and pictures taken.  The Governor spent over twenty minutes with the SAR contingent.  He commented on how happy it would make his father to know they had a Revolutionary War Patriot.  Special thanks must be extended to Genealogist General Joseph Dooley who was unable to attend due to the blizzard in Washington, DC.  Compatriot Dooley performed the research on the Governor’s lineage and prepared his application.
