April 15, 2004

A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S. A. R., was held at 6:30 PM Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin, Texas.

Members attending were: Vance Roberts, Fred Jacobs, Tom H. Gann, Fred Preston, Lester Sparks and Ed Shelton.

Guests attending were: Sue Roberts, Betty Preston, Mildred Sparks, Honora Jacobs, Vicki Gann, Jane Shelton and Nicole Weaver.

President Fred Preston called the meeting to order. Chaplain Lester Sparks gave the invocation. Vance Roberts led the assemblage in the pledge to the American Flag.   Fred Preston gave the pledge to the SAR Flag.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as mailed.

There was no old business. Under new business Fred Preston told the members about the new chapter web page at www.go-lufkin.com/sar. Also a questionnaire was passed out for each member to show their email address, vote on 5 meetings per year and make any other suggestions. It was agreed to go from 3 to 5 meetings per year. The next meeting will be May 17th at the Ora McMullen Genealogy Room of the Library at 5:45 PM.  We will then go to the Golden Corral in area 7 (the room to the right).     We will have the use of the microphone and amplifier as we did at this meeting. Fred indicated he was going to look into some projects but nothing was discussed in detail.

Ed Shelton suggested that we give $100 to Kurth Memorial Library for the purchase of books relating to the American Revolution and then have Cindy McMullen report to our group at a later date on the books purchased.  Tom Gann made the motion, it was seconded and approved.

Fred Preston introduced the speaker for the evening, Chapter Compatriot Ed Shelton. Ed spoke about his Revolutionary War ancestors Thomas Shelton (FIFE Major - Virginia Militia, Peter Shelton (2nd Lt. - Virginia Militia) and Samuel Shelton (Sgt. - Virginia Militia). All three were in compatriot Shelton's direct line of ancestoring. Ed Shelton also talked about "What caused the American Revolution" and other related items. Ed passed out a number of documents for the groups examination.

Fred Preston then led the assemblage in the SAR Closing Admonition, all standing and in unison.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom H. Gann, Secretary

NOTE:  The next meeting was originally scheduled for May 20 but when it was decided to have a hands on training session with the library computers, it was moved to Monday since the library is open until 7 PM on Monday.  This however, does conflict with the Angelina County Genealogy Society which also meets at the library on Monday.  They are also going to talk about the software, Heritage Quest, but we will have actual use.  PLEASE BRING SOME INFORMATION ON AN ANCESTOR YOU ARE TRYING TO GET MORE INFORMATION ON AND LET CINDY SEE WHAT SHE CAN DO.
