MINUTES
September 24, 2009
A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S.A.R., was held at 7 PM Thursday September 24, 2009 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin. Members and guests started arriving after 6 PM to enjoy a Dutch Treat dinner before the meeting
President Fred Preston called the meeting to order. Preston led the assemblage in the pledge to the American Flag and the SAR Flag. Mike Everheart gave the invocation.
Preston then recognized the guests. Members present were Tom Gann, Neal Naranjo, Mike Everheart, Harold Newsom, Robert Kurth, Jr., Burl Ivy, Bob Ham and Fred Preston. Guests were Betty Preston, Sam and Mary Griffin, Vicki Gann, June Everheart, Sarah Kurth and Annabel Kurth, Beverly and Steve Howland, Glyn and Jane Bomer (pros. member), Lynn Rice, Ron Hopson & David Ormsby,( pros members), Charlene Ham, Mary Ann Naranjo, Scott Marcotte and Doc Joe Allen Rice. There were 8 members and 18 guests.
There were no corrections to the minutes so they stand approved.
Treasurer Jeff Corbett was not present.
Under Old Business, Preston reported that both St. Cyprians Episcopal School and Pineywoods Academy have been contacted about the Poster Contest on Bunker Hill and both will participate. Need more schools.
Neal Naranjo has frames for the Declaration of Independence we plan to place in area schools. Just need to get together to present them to the schools.
Mike Everheart reported that he had sent out letters to eligible Eagle Scouts in Angelina County.
Elections coming up in November. Elected officers would take office in January. Anyone can put their name in but as it stands now, J. Neal Naranjo would be President, Burl Ivy Vice President, Fred Preston Secretary and Jeff Corbett Treasurer. The President can then nominate the other officers. One needed badly is the Sgt at Arms who would take the flags home after the meeting, bring back to next meeting. Must have good attendance.
Preston reported that he had accumulated about 50 more flags since the retirement ceremony in Tyler last June.
New Business: Buddy Zeagler's supplimental application in the name of Peter Hanks III was approved but Buddy wasn't present. Kenneth Wayne Jones of Jasper was approved but he too could not attend. Bob Ham was approved and was presented his certificate and rosette. We lost two members, Neal and Richard Murphy transferred to the Fredonia Chapter in Nac. We currently have 41 paid members.

A motion was made to have two more people capable of signing bank transactions in addition to Jeff Corbett. It was decided to have the Treasurer, President and Secretary all on the banks signing sheet. Motion was made, seconded and approved.
At this time we called Scott Marcotte, the new chief of police in Lufkin to come forward and Naranjo presented him with a Certificate and Medal for Law Enforcement.

Mike Everheart presented Preston and Naranjo with color guard medals and encouraged other members to become color guard members.

There being no other new business, Naranjo introduced the speaker, Doc Joe Allen Rice, who talked about Sam Houston's involvement in the Revolutionary War and the First Day of the Revolutionary War. It was a very enlightning and well received talk..

Preston reminded those present that the November meeting will be the third Tuesday or November 17th. Speaker not confirmed as yet.
Preston then led the assemblage in the closing Admonition and the meeting was adjourned about 8:30 PM.
