LT. NATHAN GANN CHAPTER
SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
LUFKIN, TEXAS
MINUTES
January 28, 2010
A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S.A.R., was held at 7 PM Thursday January 28, 2010 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin. Members and guests started arriving after 6 PM to enjoy a Dutch Treat dinner before the meeting
President Fred Preston called the meeting to order. Mike Everheart gave the invocation. Preston then led the assemblage in the pledges to the American Flag and the SAR Flag.
Preston then recognized the guests. Members present were Jeff Corbett, Tom Gann, Mike Everheart, Bob Ham, Burl Ivy, Harry Taylor III and Fred Preston. Guests were June Everheart, Betty Preston, Harry Taylor, Jr .,, Charlene Ham, Sam and Mary Griffin, Ben and Ellen Pyle and Ben's sister Ann Richardson, Vicki Gann. There were 7 members and 10 guests. Mike Everheart and Joe Allports dues were paid to Jeff Corbett for dual membership.
There were no corrections to the minutes so they stand approved.
Jeff Corbett arrived late so there was no treasurer's report.
Under Old Business, Preston talked about the Eagle Scout Contest and the difficulty getting Eagles to participate. Last year we offered $300 first place, $150 second place and had no entries. This year we got our one and only entry on Wednesday the 27th. John Knox, State Chairman told me he had to have them in hand by Monday the 1st so it was mailed today. Unfortunately it was missing three signatures so would have little chance for winning State. I will invite the applicant to attend our March meeting, get him to read his 500 word essay and present him with the first place check.
Poster Contest is also suffering for lack of participation. Pineywoods Academy participated and submitted 3 posters, one of which we judged overall 1st place. St. Cyprians only had one student participate. Going to have to work on getting more participation in this also.
Constitution and By Laws have been rewritten and three copies were given to Bob Ham, Burl Ivy and Mike Everheart for their review and comments.
At this time Preston called Harry Taylor III to the front and presented him with his Certificate of membership and Mike Everheart read the official installation speech.
Harry Taylor III being inducted by Mike Everheart, Dist. 10 VP. Harry was accepted 12/18/2008.
New Business:
Some members have not paid their dues. If you did not get an invoice, contact Fred Preston to see what is wrong. Dual members should pay their $9.50 directly to Jeff Corbett. Only unpaid dual is Doanald Stallings and I think he paid the wrong person.
Everheart will re - write the grant application to Wal-mart leaving out mention of the Eagle Scout Scholarship. $300 is hardly a scholarship anyway. Preston mentioned he had a list of 19 or 20 possible new members and asked the members to talk to any of those they know and look for other possible new members. Those on Preston's list are: Doug Ashburn, Kevin McKay (both sons of SAR or DAR), Doug Smith, Charles Young, Dick Reddy, Ron Hopson, David Ormsby, Sam Griffin, Sr. and Jr., Tom Williams (Diboll), John Williams (Lufkin), Woody Peavy, Phil Huber, Jack Irish, Danny Powell, Dan Spivey and Bill Royle (both previous members), Chuck Dierikx (Darlene Neuhaus brother), Steve Reynolds and David Walker.
At this time Preston asked members to stay after the meeting to judge posters.
He also commented about the Rumbaugh Oration contest and told the membership that he was the Region 5 Chairman and may have to have a hearing of a contestant. Normally to judge a several competeting contestants but in this case the contestants grandfather wants us to judge him for his experience. It would also be good experience for us. Will be asking for 3 or 4 volunteers to judge, presentation, historical accuracy, how it applies to today and also time of speach.
Mike Everheart then came forward to induct the Officers for 2010 -2011.
L to R: Mike Everheart, Dist. 10 VP, Fred Preston, Secretary, Jeff Corbett, Treasurer, Bob Ham, 1st VP and Burl Ivy 2nd VP.
At this time, Preston introduced the speaker for the night, Tom H. Gann. Tom is one of our members and therefore no introduction was needed. Tom talked about a short period of Sam Houston's early years, 1806-1818.
Tom Gann's Presentation on Houston
Tom talked about Sam Houston between the years of 1806 and 1818 when he was I think 13 years old to 25 years old. He had very little education but was very tall for his age, 5'11" at age 13.. Houston lived with Indians and became very familiar with their life style. Tom also talked about and showed pictures of many Indian Chiefs of the time period and ones that Houston knew. After the talk there was about 10-15 minutes of questions and answers. Very good talk and well received.
The next meeting will be March 25. Speaker will be William Covington who will display articles that could have been used by soldiers in the Revolutionary War. His uniform is also one that could be worn in battle. He had a display at the State Meeting in Nacogdoches last Spring. Should be a good talk for the Poster Contest Winners.because Covington displays things like playing cards and dice as well as weapons.
Preston led the assemblage in the Closing Admonition and closed
the meeting about 8:15. Then members voted on posters. To see the posters go here. .
Respectfully submitted: Fred Preston
