President Fred Preston called the meeting to order and Lester Sparks gave the invocation. Sam Griffin led the assemblage in the pledge to the U.S. Flag and the SAR Flag all standing and in unison.

Preston asked for a motion to accept the September minutes which were emailed and displayed on our web site.  Fred Jacobs made the motion and Fred Hutson seconded.  The motion carried.

Treasurer, Jeff Corbett, was absent and therefore no treasurer's report..

Under Old Business, Preston reported that a committee had been appointed to vote for the Eagle Scout Scholarship winner.  With a split decision, Daniel Perry was voted as the winner and his application has been mailed to State.  James Carlin, last years winner, was an extremely close second.  Tom Gann made a motion that we award Perry with $100 and Carlin with $50 at the next meeting.  Fred Jacobs seconded and motion carried.

President Preston reported that Pineywoods Academy, St. Cyprians Episcopal School, Brookhollow Elementary and Hudson had been contacted about the Poster Contest.   Brookhollow said they didn't have enough time, too busy with tests.  Hudson too did not participate, reason unknown.  Apparently we haven't gotten the message across that this is supposed to be individual effort and can be done at home.  The whole class does not have to participate.  At the end of the meeting, Preston, Roberts and Gann voted on the posters and all three winners were from Piney Woods Academy.   They will be recognized at the March meeting.

Under new business, Preston noted that the March meeting would fall during Spring Break and asked for a motion to change it to March 23rd.  It was so moved and approved.

Preston then called Tom Gann to the front.  Tom relayed a story about the actions of State Trooper Chris Harrison.  Tom was on a jury involving this troopers actions.   President Preston then awarded Trooper Chris Harrison with a Certificate of Commendation and a medal.

At this time Preston introduced the speaker, Trent Squyres.    Trent was born and raised in Angelina County, has a major in History from SFA, has a deep interest in history, is a manager at Sherwin Williams, currently president of the Kiwanis Club.   Trent talked about the violence in Angelina County during and after the Civil War with hangings, shootings and a big shoot out which left 4 dead and 19 wounded.  OK Corral was small in comparison.

Preston thanked Trent .for a fine presentation and then led the assemblage in the SAR Closing Admonition.   The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:50 PM.   Meeting actually started at 6:50 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Fred Preston, President
